CalTrak Privacy Policy
CalTrak is built privacy-first. We do not collect, store, sell, or share your personal data.
We also wanted a clean, simple interface — no paywalls, no premium tiers, no payments, no accounts. Just like your diet can be: simple.
What CalTrak stores
Foods you log, exercise, body measurements, and goals are stored locally on your device using Apple’s SwiftData. CalTrak does not use CloudKit and does not sync your app data to iCloud or any server. Your data stays on the device unless you choose to export it.
What CalTrak sends to other services
When you scan a barcode, search for a food, or use the AI lookup feature, the app sends a request to our proxy server at caltrak.app. Depending on which feature you use, the request may include:
- A barcode number (barcode scanning)
- A search term (text search and autocomplete)
- A free-text meal description (AI nutrition lookup)
- A user-selected image (when you choose photo-based AI lookup — e.g. a meal photo or nutrition label screenshot you pick)
Our proxy is a pass-through. It forwards the lookup to one of these providers and returns the result:
- Open Food Facts (barcode lookups)
- FatSecret or USDA FoodData Central (text search)
- Google Gemini (AI nutrition lookup, including image-based lookup)
The proxy does not store, log, or retain request bodies, queries, free-text descriptions, images, lookup results, or location. We do not include your name, Apple ID, email, phone number, IP address, or location in these requests.
How we count active users
To get a rough sense of how many people are using CalTrak on a given day, the app generates a random, anonymous identifier the first time it launches and includes it with each request to our proxy. This identifier:
- Is a randomly-generated UUID created entirely on your device.
- Is not linked to your Apple ID, email, phone number, name, location, IP address, advertising identifier, or any other piece of information that could trace back to you.
- Is used only to count distinct devices for service-health metrics (e.g. “how many people used the app today”). It is never associated with the content of your queries, food logs, photos, or any other data beyond counting unique active devices.
- Resets to a new value when you delete and reinstall CalTrak.
No personally identifiable information is collected, stored, or transmitted as part of this counting. The identifier exists solely so we can answer questions like “is anyone using the app this week?” without tracking who any individual user is.
Apple Health
With your permission, CalTrak reads workouts, activity energy, steps, distance, route data, and supported body metrics from Apple Health.
CalTrak writes the food nutrition you log, weight you record, and body measurements you enter back to Apple Health. CalTrak does not write exercises or workouts to Apple Health.
Health data stays inside Apple Health on your device — it is never sent to our proxy or any third-party service.
What CalTrak does NOT do
- No accounts, no sign-in, no email, no phone number
- No advertising, no ad networks, no tracking
- No analytics or crash reporting SDKs
- No third-party SDKs of any kind
Children
CalTrak is rated 4+ and does not knowingly collect any data from anyone, including children.
